This year, in partnership with the Roy P. Benavidez family and foundation, TAMACC and Leadership Tejas are rolling out a new operation: the first-ever Roy P. Benavidez Scholarship Luncheon. It’s not a formality. It’s a call to action.

The objective is clear—to build the next generation of leaders and ensure no promising student is left behind.

Because the name behind this mission is not ordinary.

Roy P. Benavidez wasn’t supposed to become a legend. Born into poverty in Texas, he faced discrimination, hardship, and a world that didn’t expect much from him. But expectation has never been the measure of a man—action is.

And when the moment came, he didn’t hesitate.

In the chaos of the Vietnam War, under relentless enemy fire, Benavidez made a decision that would define his life. He stepped into the fight—alone. Outnumbered. Outgunned. Undeterred.

What followed wasn’t just courage; it was defiance.

He moved through gunfire and explosions, pulling wounded soldiers to safety, shielding others with his own body, and refusing to quit even as injuries piled up. Most would have fallen. He advanced.

And when it was over, lives had been saved because one man refused to walk away.

For that, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. But medals don’t tell the full story—character does.

That same spirit drives this luncheon.

This isn’t just about remembering a hero. It’s about building more of them—leaders who will rise, endure, and carry forward a legacy that says no obstacle is too great.
