The inaugural Roy P. Benavidez Scholarship Luncheon, hosted by the Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce (TAMACC) in partnership with the Roy P. Benavidez family and foundation and Leadership Tejas, was a tremendous success. It brought together community leaders, educators, veterans, students, and business professionals for an inspiring and emotional celebration of leadership, service, and opportunity.
More than simply a luncheon, the event became a powerful call to action focused on education, mentorship, and investing in the next generation of leaders. The mission of the gathering was clear: to help deserving students pursue higher education and leadership opportunities without financial barriers standing in their way.
The overwhelming support from attendees, sponsors, and community partners demonstrated a strong commitment to preserving the legacy of Roy P. Benavidez while creating meaningful opportunities for future generations. Throughout the luncheon, guests reflected on the extraordinary life story of Roy P. Benavidez, whose journey from poverty and discrimination in Texas to becoming one of America’s most respected military heroes continues to inspire people across generations. Speakers highlighted the courage, resilience, and selfless service that defined his life, particularly his heroic actions during the Vietnam War, when he repeatedly risked his life to rescue wounded soldiers under intense enemy fire.
Adding to the moving tribute was music by the Veterans Band of Corpus Christi and a ceremonial Color Guard presentation by Tejanos in Action. Guests also viewed a powerful video presentation featuring Benavidez sharing his own firsthand account of what has been called “Six Hours of Hell,” along with the key milestones that led to his heroic actions on May 2, 1968.
The luncheon served as a reminder that Roy P. Benavidez’s legacy extends far beyond the Medal of Honor. His story represents perseverance, sacrifice, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to serving others—values organizers hope scholarship recipients will carry forward into their own lives, careers, and communities.
“This luncheon is not simply about remembering a hero,” organizers shared during the program. “It is about building more leaders who are willing to rise above obstacles, serve their communities, and create opportunities for others.”
The event also highlighted the importance of higher education, mentorship, and civic engagement within the Hispanic community. Business leaders and supporters emphasized that scholarships and leadership development programs have the power to create life-changing opportunities for students striving to achieve their educational dreams.
