The Austin-Saltillo Sister Cities Association (ASSCA), in collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico in Austin, Downtown Austin Alliance Foundation, the City of Austin, Garcia Injury Law, Casa Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant & Cantina, and Texas Gas Service, invites the Austin metropolitan area and Central Texas to join in celebrating El Grito de Independencia de México on Monday, September 15, 2025, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Republic Square Park (422 Guadalupe Street). This free community celebration commemorates the 215th anniversary of Mexico’s independence and features the historic reenactment of “El Grito” by Cónsul General Humberto Hernández Haddad—a powerful tradition that honors the moment Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla first called for independence in 1810.
An Evening of Culture, Music, and Community
The celebration will showcase Roy Lozano’s Ballet Folklórico de Texas, Mariachi Capital, and additional live performances, filling Republic Square with music, dance, and pride. Guests can also explore a Mexican artisan mercado, enjoy children’s activities, and connect with valuable resources at a community fair highlighting health, immigration, and the shared history of Texas and Mexico.
Why It Matters
Today, more than 35 million Mexican and Mexican Americans across the U.S. celebrate Mexico’s independence, carrying forward a cultural legacy that connects families, communities, and nations. Texas, in particular, shares deep roots with Mexico dating back to when both were part of New Spain. From the creation of Coahuila y Tejas in 1824 to Texas’ independence in 1836, Spanish language, customs, and traditions have remained an integral part of the state’s heritage.
