TAMACC Addresses Business Implications of SB4 in Community Lunch and Learn Event

Port Arthur, Texas – On Friday, January 19, 2024, the Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce (TAMACC), in collaboration with The Greater Beaumont and the Greater Port Arthur Chambers of Commerce, organized an enlightening Community Lunch and Learn event. The session, hosted at the Lamar State College Port Arthur Gates Library, aimed to delve into the business implications of the impending enforcement of Senate Bill 4 (SB4).

The Community Lunch and Learn shed light on the potential impact of SB4 on the daily lives of Texans, with a specific emphasis on its effects on businesses. State Representatives Christian Manuel (District 22) and Ana-Marie Ramos (District 102) addressed the standing room only audience of over 80 citizens, articulating their concerns about SB4 and its wide-ranging consequences.

SB4, a subject of paramount concern, was the focal point of discussions led by an immigration expert Kristin Etter and two Texas state representatives. Etter, representing the Texas Immigration Law Council, illuminated the significant consequences of SB4. Notably, she underscored that individuals driving with the intent to conceal someone from law enforcement under the human smuggling statute could face a minimum 10-year prison sentence. Even if the driver is unaware of the passenger’s undocumented immigration status, law enforcement assumes intent to conceal, as highlighted by Etter.

Representative Manuel provided a poignant example to illustrate the potential ramifications of SB4, recounting a scenario where a well-intentioned soccer mom giving her child’s friend a ride home could unknowingly face charges for smuggling.

TAMACC played a pivotal role in raising awareness about the far-reaching effects of SB4 on Texas residents and businesses. The event served as a platform for constructive dialogue and informed discussions, bringing together community members, immigration experts, and state representatives.

The collaboration of The Greater Beaumont and the Greater Port Arthur Chambers of Commerce with TAMACC underscored the importance of a united effort in addressing the concerns surrounding Senate Bill 4. As the community becomes more informed, TAMACC remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting and advocating for the interests of Texas residents and businesses.
